Sanctuary Cities for the Unborn: Door Knocking in Abilene and Plainview, TX

These past two weekends, The Young Conservatives of Texas (YCT) at Texas Tech along with YCT Abilene Christian University and Raiders Defending Life (RDL) block-walked and knocked on doors to help pass the “Sanctuary City for the Unborn” Ordinance in Abilene, Tx. and Plainview, Tx. They made a showing after the ordinance was passed in their own college town, Lubbock, Texas. Having worked as grassroot coordinators previously, YCT Texas Tech and RDL are familiar with the effort, determination, and hard work it takes to pass this ordinance. YCT worked hard in partnership with Texas Right to Life of East Texas in effort to pass this ordinance.

Abilene is a city in West Texas with a population of 125,182 people making it the 27th most populous city in the state of Texas. A large portion of their citizens are conservative and pro-life; the ordinance seems to have a fair chance of passing with support and backing from local groups. For now, pro-life student organizations and churches are collecting signatures for a petition to put the ordinance on the city council ballot. This will be put the ordinance to a vote and, to many of the townspeople’s hope, subsequently passed.

Plainview, Texas, is located outside of Lubbock and has a smaller population of around 20,000 people. Pro-life groups have more recently been working to put the ordinance to a vote, which is becoming more relevant as cities in West Texas outlaw abortion and force facilities like Planned Parenthood to set up abortion clinics outside of the city limits.

The ordinance Sanctuary City for the Unborn is an important law that puts the power in the hands of the citizens to declare their city an unwelcome place for abortion and abortion facilities and protecting the lives of the unborn. Pro-life Texans plan to continue to fight for the ordinance’s passing all over Texas.
