On February 10th, Goldsmith, Texas, became the nineteenth city to pass the sanctuary city ordinance. This town was a welcome addition to the total number of cities that have passed the ordinance, as places from East and West Texas come together to protect the lives of the unborn.
Goldsmith is a town northwest of Odessa with a population of 257 people. As a small oil town, they tend to lean conservative and live a suburban-rural lifestyle. The ordinance Sanctuary City for the Unborn is a law voted on by the city council to “outlaw” abortion within city limits. Their contribution to the number of cities dedicated to saving the lives of the unborn highlights that no city is too small to pass this ordinance.
In West Texas, there has been a large effort to get more cities to pass the ordinance. For it to pass, it must first get put on the city council’s agenda. Once on the agenda, the council will hear outside speakers on the issue and then vote on it. If the ordinance fails to pass, it can be put up as a referendum to be voted on by the public. The organization Texas Right to Life has been spearheading this issue, going city to city trying to gain more supporters.
The Sanctuary City for the Unborn ordinance remains an important law, passed by the citizens for the citizens. It makes known that their city is an unwelcome place for abortion and abortion facilities, further protecting the lives of the unborn.
