On a Saturday afternoon, February 6th, the fight for the rights of the unborn continued in West Texas. A group of four students from Texas Tech’s Young Conservatives of Texas went to Shallowater, Texas to block walk. The subject of the block walk was getting signatures for a petition to have Shallowater become one of the rising number of sanctuary cities for the unborn.
Shallowater is located northwest of Lubbock, a town of 2,551 people. The area is very rural and leans conservative, which makes it a good candidate to become a sanctuary city for the unborn. The ordinance Sanctuary City for the Unborn is a law voted on by the city council to “outlaw” abortion within city limits. As of February 10th, 19 Texas cities have declared themselves sanctuary cities for the unborn.
The student organization has been fighting for change in West Texas, including cities like Odessa, Lubbock, Ropesville, and now Shallowater. They spent Saturday going door to door, speaking with residents about the ordinance and asking if they would sign the petition to bring it to their city council’s attention. For the ordinance to pass, it must first get put on the city council’s agenda. Once on the agenda, the council will hear outside speakers on the issue and form a vote. If the ordinance does not pass, it can be put up to a vote for the public.
The ordinance making Shallowater a Sanctuary City for the Unborn is an important law that puts the power in the hands of the citizens to declare their city an unwelcome place for abortion and abortion facilities, protecting the lives of the unborn. Pro-life Texans will continue to fight for its passage all over Texas.
