Annual 9/11 Flag Planting Memorial

On Sunday, September 11th, The Young Conservatives of Texas (YCT) at Texas Tech hosted their annual 9/11 flag planting memorial at Memorial Circle facing the Seal and Broadway Street. They received a visit from Texas State Senator Dawn Buckingham, who informed those in attendance about her future campaign for Texas Land Commissioner.

This memorial was the 15th performed at Texas Tech, although it has been a longstanding tradition among all the chapters within the state. There are 3,000 small American flags planted into Memorial Circle’s soil, one to signify every life lost during the terrorist attack in 2001. This non-partisan event seeks students from all over campus to come together in unity and remember the tragic event that happened over twenty years ago.

Those in attendance included the members of YCT, some members of the student body, Dawn Buckingham and her team, and local activist Mark Lee Dickson. While a somber remembrance of what took place on 9/11, there is a humble respect in being able to keep the memory alive. As people enter college, the memory of 9/11 may fade due to those having not been alive for it happening—but the true American spirit will never die, as long as we never forget.
